Julie Blackmon

Photographer Julie Blackmon is interested in the conflation of art and life, particularly how this plays out in domestic environments. Her experiences as part of a large family growing up, then starting a family of her own, inspired her 'Domestic Vacations' series, which documents the everyday experiences in her own home and in the homes of her sisters. The images are both fictional and biographical, a combination of elements of the real stress and chaos of her family life with fantastical and imagined elements, capturing the opposing desires to live in the moment and escape reality. Her photographs are colorful, whimsical, and carefully composed, referencing the visual tradition of Dutch and Flemish genre painting.
