Donald Baechler's paintings usually have a central silhouette on top of a textured or collaged surface. Old washcloths, old illustrations, or other elements act as a kind of messy background against which a central figure is in focus. Often the central figure is painted in black silhouette fashion in the center of the canvas. The works feel childlike or simple but arguably they are quite complex in how they can undeniably convince the viewer of the subject they are seeing:  a man, a flower, a schoolhouse, a car, a globe.
